A 16 year old student has written a compelling letter accusing her teacher of racism and creating a hostile learning environment for Black students. The 14 page complaint was filed in conjunction with a complaint that was filed with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

The student’s letter reveals multiple instances of allegations of racially-discriminatory behavior from math teacher, Michele Macke. The student is being represented by the Civil Rights Litigation Initiative at the University of Michigan Law School. According to the letter, Macke insulted Black students and their parents and refused to attend a Black History Month event because it was a “waste of time.”
