On September 1st, the CDC issued an eviction moratorium through December 31st, 2020, banning evictions of people who lost work due to the pandemic, in an effort to help eliminate the spread of COVID-19. The CDC believes there will be a spike in shelters if evictions were to proceed. However, it is essential to note that this order is not rent forgiveness, but rent delay. This means there is still a risk that 40 million renters will have to face eviction notices again, but this time in the dead of winter.

There are several steps that renters will need to take to benefit from the moratorium; one being, the tenants must sign and submit a declaration to the landlord certifying under penalty that they qualify for protection under the moratorium.
